Students in Audrey Vanecek’s first grade class are learning
about community service. Most recently, they assembled “take home” meals for
students in their school who don’t have enough to eat.
“They really have a heart for serving our community,” said
Vanecek. “They understand that we all have needs and that to be leaders we have
to meet everyone’s needs.”
Vanecek said the project was made possible through a Donorschoose.org
project that was fully funded a week later. Then Walmart donated bags for the
class to assemble the take home meals. Students worked together, all filling
leadership roles to make sure attention was given to every detail.
“We
talked about it and decided we would create class jobs and they would help me manage
the food pantry,” Vanecek said.
One student served as manager for the classroom pantry. Another
served as assistant manager, and there were others who organized the items and
delivered them to teachers for distribution. Everyone helped prepare the take
home meals.
“We had oatmeal, cereal and mac and cheese,” said Kason Page.
“We want other people to have food,” said Kienna Torres. “To
have breakfast and to have lunch and to have snacks.”
“Because
(some) people don’t have food in their house,” said Diego Davidson.
Vanecek
said she found out needs from other Pasemann teachers and school officials,
then her students delivered the take home meals to those teachers for
distribution.
