Taylor
ISD coach Ramon Fuentes has been named Defensive Coordinator of the Year for
Central Texas. The award was presented by the Central Texas Football Coaches
Association, a professional organization that includes coaching staffs from all
high schools, 1A – 6A, from Waco to San Marcos and from College Station to
Llano.
“It’s
nice to be recognized for something that you love to do,” Fuentes said of the
honor. “But I give all the credit to the coaches that I work with and the
athletes that I coach.”
Fuentes
said twenty-four interceptions were recorded this season, the most in his
career as defensive coordinator.
“The
players did a great job executing the game plan for each and every game,” he
commented. “They played a physical, aggressive and smart defense.”
Athletic
Director Rusty Purser said Fuentes was nominated for the award based on the
results this past season.
“One
of the most looming highlights would be the fact that we forced over thirty
turnovers on the season,” said Purser. “And decreased points per game given up
from twenty-seven in 2015 down to seventeen in 2016. Ramon did a great
deal of work transforming our defense from a four man front to a three man
front, and using that change to greatly benefit our defensive football unit.”
Fuentes
said several players know about the award and have congratulated him.
“I
think they are more excited about the award than I am,” he said.
