Elijah Music-Smith has been
the manager for the eighth-grade football team since September. A group of officials
were so impressed with the job he was doing that they decided to make him an
honorary referee.
“I was notified that this
group of officials from the Austin chapter would be at our Taylor Middle School
game and they wanted to do something for Elijah,” Coach Allen Dews said. “He
was outfitted in full referee gear and allowed to help out during the game."
Dews said that Elijah helped
with the coin toss, blew the whistle to start and end plays and even signaled a
touchdown or two.
“Elijah had become very interested in what the officials were
doing during the games and started up conversations with them, opening the door
to this great friendship,” Dews said. “I think what may have happened is I lost
my manager, but I gained another official.”
When Elijah isn’t busy with his new duties, he
plays center on the EWCC Comets football team.
