Taylor’s Academic Decathlon
has continued their tradition of being a nationally ranked team. They currently
hold the state’s bronze medal in the small school division, and are ranked
sixth in the nation for medium schools.
“I was so proud of the team,”
said AcDec coach, Vicki Rowe. “Our kids finished in the top ten on so many
tests.”
This year’s competition covered an in-depth
study of Africa. At the national level, Toby
Sellers finished 7th overall in Honors. Francisco Martinez won a silver
medal in Varsity Music, Gabe Kopit won silver in Scholastic Literature and
Lexie Whitworth won gold in Honors Essay.
According to Rowe, the Academic Decathlon program
nurtures scholars who desire to learn more than the average student and
provides a foundation in skills that are necessary in today's world.
“Students who take AcDec throughout their
years of high school tend to have higher SAT/ACT scores and perform well on AP
exams because they have learned how to study and prepare for academic
challenges,” Rowe said. “This year's team is once again a testimonial to that
kind of dedication to learning.”
In literature,
seven of the nine team members finished in the top 10 in their divisions.
In music, eight
finished in the top nine while seven finished in the top ten in science.
Six finished in
the top 10 in art and also in social science.
The curriculum
for the 2018 – 2019 school will cover the 1960s.
